I had assumptions about what life in Central Alabama would look like, and most of them were wrong. Montgomery has a lot more going on than its reputation suggests. A growing arts community, locally owned restaurants and shops, a rich history, and a genuine sense of place that is hard to find in bigger, more transient cities. The surrounding communities, Prattville, Pike Road, and Millbrook among them, have their own character and have been growing steadily. I did not expect to feel so rooted here so quickly, but I do.
The cost of living here changed the way I approach work. When your basic expenses are manageable, you have room to take risks. I started freelancing on the side, invested in my craft, and eventually launched my own studio. None of that felt possible when I was stretching every paycheck in a more expensive city. The financial breathing room was not just comfortable, it was career-changing.

I own a home. I have time outside of work. I am close to the Gulf Coast, the state parks, and a community I actually know. I spent years assuming I needed to be somewhere louder and more expensive to prove something. What I found in Central Alabama instead was space to build something real. If you are on the fence, I would just say: give it a chance to surprise you.
